Album Review: Portishead, by Portishead
I first heard Portishead when their first single, "Sour Times," received heavy radio play. Somehow, though, I forgot all about them when their debut album, "Dummy," failed to produce any other radio singles. The release of their self-titled second album did not even catch my notice. Several years later, one of my friends showed up at my office one morning with a stack of CDs to loan me. In that stack were two Portishead CDs, and he said it caused him physical pain to loan them out, but he trusted me to return them quickly. Intrigued, those CDs were the first in the stack to go into my CD player. What I heard left me wanting more. I finally got what I wanted when I purchased "Portishead." Since I already had a copy of "Live: Roseland NYC," I had heard several of the songs on "Portishead," at least as live recordings. The album versions I found on "Portishead" were far better, in my opinion, as they were audibly much clearer than I had previously heard. Of the songs on "Portishead," "All Mine" is definitely my favorite track. The song features the typical rich vocals and soulful music of any Portishead song, but the lyrics are particularly wonderful in this case. Honorable mentions go to "Over," "Seven Months, and "Only You." |
