How daylight savings time helps energy conservation Daylight savings time was proposed in 1907, but it was not used on a widespread basis until 1916, when wartime needs dictated the use of daylight savings time to save on coal use. So from its early days, daylight savings time was designed to be an energy conserving measure. In the modern era, daylight saving time helps to save energy by allowing people to take advantage of natural light until later in the evening. On a sunny summer evening, people may be able to wait much later before turning on their indoor lights. When so many households are using more electricity to run their air conditioning and fans, it can help to save on household energy use. Later sunsets also give people more of an opportunity to enjoy outdoor activities, which may mean that they don't need to use as much energy at home while they are outside. Although the time change may cause some temporary confusion or affect sleep schedules for some people, overall, the energy conserving aspects of daylight savings time make it a useful practice.
