Who were the Pilgrims?
The Pilgrims were not the first European settlers to reach the shores of what would become America, but they are some of the better known early colonists. The Pilgrims were a group of English Puritans, a religious group that had separated from the Church of England. Religious dissension in England was a dangerous prospect in the early seventeenth century, and the leaders of the group that became the Pilgrims had fled to the Netherlands before finally moving the members of their group to the New World. The Pilgrims left Europe in September of 1620 and arrived in North America, at what would become Plymouth, Massachusetts, in November of 1620. Aside from their early arrival in North America, the Pilgrims are also known for their fairly egalitarian government system, established by the Mayflower Compact. Although not a true democracy, the Mayflower Compact is often cited as some of the inspiration behind American democracy. Among some of the better known Pilgrims are John Alden and Priscilla Mullins, about whom Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote "The Courtship of Miles Standish." Longfellow was a descendant of this couple, and many Americans can trace their ancestry back to the Pilgrims as well, usually through Alden and Mullins.
